The Gaslight is the composition and sound design studio of Cape Town based composer and drummer, Shaun Michau. Established in 2004, The Gaslight designs sound, in any genre, from simple soundscapes and underscores to fully arranged and orchestrated scores for film, TV, advertisements, animations, theatre, corporate, mobile applications and games.
Shaun graduated with a degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Cape Town (UCT) College of Music in 2003. He is the drummer and part owner, along with pianist Jason Reolon of the jazz group Breakfast Included, which formed in 1999. Shaun joined David Hurwitz and The Lost on their 2002 U.S. tour. He has also played with some of SA’s top musicians.
At the age of 19, he wrote the music for the Baxter theatre’s production of Equus. Since then, Shaun has written many original scores for theatre produced by Artscape including: Oedipus, New Day, Jocasta Rising, Witnesses, Now Now, Crooked, A Man And A Dog, Unforced Errors, Matthew Wild's Ulysses Black, Wrestlers, the award-winning Dalliances and Romeo and Juliet. Maynardville's productions included Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and The Comedy of Errors. He also wrote the score to the mokumentary called The Satyr of Springbok Heights, produced and directed by Robert Silke.
He composed the music for the South African Parliament’s State of the Nation Address in 2005, and has written music for corporate videos, commercials and events. Some of his clients include Mercedes-Benz, Miller Beer, British American Tobacco, Entersekt, Batstone and Batstone Pool.
For the past two years, Shaun was the full-time in-house composer, sound designer and audio engineer at Bubblegum Educational Design. Productions featured on local television channels, DSTV Mindset and eTV include Like Lerato, Tumi and the Bigfoot Show, Squigglemajig and many more.
